San Luis, Mexico

Our Mission
Using our gifts and working with the community of San Luis to further the Kingdom of God.

What We Do
Short-term mission with a long-term impact.

How We Do It
Newberg-area Friends churches first started going to Mexico roughly 30 years ago to build houses for families in need. And over the years, we've built a lot of houses. But the mission has changed. Last year, for instance, a team of youth and adults from Newberg, North Valley, Hillsboro and West Chehalem Friends churches built three homes, added two Sunday school rooms to an existing church building, helped a young man get the papers he needs in order to legally seek work, worked with the city's social service agency to help a family work out a property dispute, assisted our partner church in staffing a week-long "escuelita" or vacation Bible school and provided chicken coops and chickens for several families interested in sustainable husbandry. Equipo (formerly GAGA) is the name we use for this ministry, a name that means "team," because we're teaming up with the government of San Luis and the church of Nueva Esperanza in order to identify need and work together to address those needs. Each year, we send a variety of implementations teams to meet with government officials, visit with families, and get on-the-ground guidance from the local church as we identify the projects that best help us to make a long-term impact through short-term missions.
