A group of 12 parents, volunteers and students met four times this spring to identify areas in which we can work as a church to more intentionally make a difference in the lives of youth. A second group will begin meeting this fall, using the questions below as guides for discerning specific, strategic action points for NFC youth programming.

CONNECT —
What can we do to raise the general awareness within NFC of who youth are and what they're doing?
How can we help youth to become aware of and celebrate each other's successes?

MEASURE —
What is it that we should be measuring in NFC youth programming?
How can we know whether our efforts are effective?
Are there specific, desired objectives or outcomes (spiritual, social, mental, emotional, physical) that we can identify and evaluate?
What kinds of measurements are used by other ministries that might be applied in our faith community?

EQUIP —
If Sunday school is our largest program, then how can we improve its effectiveness?
How can we make youth programming more student-centered?
How do we give students a voice in the shaping of youth programming?
Should we (and if so, how) integrate a service component in Sunday school and/or youth group?
How might we better support, encourage and equip Sunday school teachers and other youth leaders?

WORSHIP —
How are youth being drawn into the processes by which we shape, maintain and lead all-church worship?
How might we be more intentional about creating worship experiences that challenge youth and draw them into an experience of God's presence?
How do we encourage youth to show up, speak up and take initiative without also fostering a sense of arrogance, a critical spirit or an attitude of judgment?

NFC Parents Update 8.15

Youth Group

High school youth group starts up on Sunday, September 12, and will be at the Youth House each week from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Middle school youth group starts up on Wednesday, September 15, and will be at the Youth House each week from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Watch for details on a high school youth group community-building retreat, coming up at the end of October.

High School Sunday School

I'm working to form a team of people who will invest weekly in the lives of high school students, take turns teaching, and meet monthly to pray and plan for this ministry. Send a note or call me if you're interested in being involved -- (503) 538-8381, ext 106. This fall, we'll be focusing on what Friends have to offer the larger Church in theology, in faith practice, and in worship.

Bridgetown Night Strike

High school youth from Newberg area churches join together at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, to get a first-hand experience of urban ministry. Bridgetown Ministries serves people who live on the streets of Portland, providing a warm meal, a clothes/blanket/sleeping bags closet, haircuts, foot-washing, and lots of conversations. It's a memorable and safe way to experience urban ministries and to interact with people in a meaningful way. Call me at (503) 538-8381, ext 106, for information on how to get involved. The next scheduled time for work with Bridgetown will be on Thursday, October 7.

Bible Quizzing

This year's season starts with a planning meeting and lunch after the second service on Sunday, September 12. We'll be studying the gospel of John and competing in four meets (Newberg; Quaker Hill in McCall, Idaho; Eugene, Oregon; and Hayden, Idaho). We already have four teams, and we'll be forming more as students sign up to take part. Call me at (503) 538-8381, ext 106, for more information. Since we're hosting the October meet, there are plenty of opportunities to help with officiating, housing students from out of town, arranging meals . . . Please let me know if you're interested in getting involved.
