Weekly Gatherings
Small Groups
It is important to address the needs of individuals, and small groups help provide a sense of identification and belonging. Small groups for High School students create an encouraging and affirming environment, enabling youth to explore their values, beliefs, and questions while applying Christ's teachings to their lives. The group stresses accountability and spiritual growth.
Youth Sunday School
This ministry provides High School youth an opportunity to gather together, worship and learn. With an emphasis on prayer and discussion, teachers and youth explore ways to apply the Truths of scripture to their personal lives. This is an opportunity for youth to grow in Christ. Josh and Kayla Reid, along with a handful of substitute teachers facilitate this class from 9:45-10:45 a.m. each Sunday in the Friends Center Gym, on the SE corner of 2nd and College.
Bible Quizzing
Bible Quizzing is a fun and rewarding program for those interested in learning the Bible and who love to have a great time. It provides a mix of Bible memorization, content understanding, and much more. Practices are every week on Sundays at 6:00 PM at the Reids' home, and four quiz tournaments (October, December, January, March) take place in Oregon and Idaho. This is a team effort and individual commitment is needed for both the Middle School or High School teams. There is also a cost involved for t-shirts, traveling, and study material. The 2008-2009 season will begin in August.

Service-Outreach
Bridgetown Ministries
Once a month, a diverse group of youth, families, and adults volunteer with Bridgetown Ministries of Portland. Their mission is simply: "Loving people, because people matter." Volunteers prepare and serve a meal, and host people at different stations: hair washing, foot washing, hair cutting, and help to distribute blankets, sleeping bags, and clothes. It provides us with an opportunity to befriend, pray with, and provide loving service to our friends on the streets of Portland. Email Josh at least one week in advance of each trip to register. Middle School youth and younger are encouraged to attend with an adult. Click here for the dates that we'll be going and a list of things needed.
Get-Away-Give-Away (GAGA)
This cross-cultural missions trip provides High School youth with a great ministry opportunity. Youth, families, and other adults travel to Mexico where they provide services in communities and local churches. Projects include building and repairing homes, running Vacation Bible Schools for children and evangelism. It's a chance to join North Valley Friends and West Chehalem Friends Church in Ministry together. Our next trip is scheduled for Spring Break 2009.
Youth Challenge
Youth Challenged through Arts in Ministry (YCAM)
YCAM provides youth exciting opportunities to minister to the people of many Friends churches during a six-week tour. This is a group opportunity for youth to develop ministry gifts, grow in their relationship with Christ, and develop lifelong friendships. Applications are due in December and the team is chosen by mid-January. There is a cost and while the youth must raise their own support, financial aid is available on a limited basis. Email Josh for an application.
Youth Challenged to Expand their World view (YCEW)
If you have completed your freshman year in High School and are interested in cross-cultural missions, this adventure is for you. YCEW provides youth with the opportunity to spend six weeks traveling to another part of the world to work side-by-side with missionaries and the nationals who live there while developing a deeper relationship with Christ. Applications are due in December and the team is chosen by mid-January. Cost is dependent upon which country is chosen. Email Josh for an application.

Camps / Retreats
MidWinter (January)
This week-long retreat is a great chance for youth to get away and gather together with friends from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. It involves fun through recreation, worship and cabin groups and has a strong emphasis on spiritual development and ministering to the needs of the world. MidWinter will take place over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend: January 13-16, 2007 in South Salem.
Volleyball Tournament (April)
Join over 300 other youth as they gather for a weekend of fun, competition, and friendship. Whether you have never played volleyball or you're a volleyball junkie, this tournament is for you. There are two to three teams that practice during February and March before the main event in April. There is also an annual video competition, which has been won by none other than Newberg Friends for the past two years. The cost is $25 and the tournament is held on April 21-22, 2007.
Samuel School II (May)
This youth retreat provides a strong challenge for spiritual development. Two to three High School students from each Yearly Meeting church in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho are selected by local youth leaders and church elders for their openness to the Spirit of God and evidence of potential leadership gifts. This is an intense experience using group building, a high ropes course and time alone with God. They are then paired up with an adult mentor (an Eli) who journeys with them for the six months following the retreat. Next year Samuel School II will take place in Newberg on May 26-29, 2007.
Youth Yearly Meeting (July)
Youth Yearly Meeting, designed for middle schoolers and high schoolers, has a strong focus on leadership development and application of faith to modern society. Special speakers and service projects enhance this fun, challenging and worthwhile conference for Northwest Yearly Meeting youth.
Youth Yearly Meeting takes place the last full week in July on the George Fox University campus: July 23-29, 2007.
Surfside Camp (August)
Over 230 High School students attend this camp for fun, fellowship and spiritual growth. Classes emphasizing spiritual and personal development are combined with activities that develop friendships. This camp is a great chance for youth to challenge, encourage and affirm each other. Scholarships are available. Click here to register.
Surfside happens for one week during the first full week in August at Twin Rocks Friends Camp: August 6-12, 2007
Register for camp here.
Backpack/Rock Climbing/River Rafting (August)
Each summer we embark on five day trip into some of the most beautiful places on earth. We've backpacked into The Brothers wilderness area, northwest of Olympia, we've rafted the Deschutes River in Mopin, Oregon, and we've camped and rock-climbed at the World-Famous Smith Rock in Terrebonne, Oregon. This is an excellent opportunity for those new to outdoor adventures. Most of the equipment is provided. Not only a physical challenging, the trip also serves as a group building time and a chance to worship Jesus and renew your relationship with Him in the midst of his creative work.
